Technical Details

what runs on :915

RIFT uses UDP port 915 for its control-plane packet exchange. Topology Information Elements (TIEs), along with related RIFT discovery and synchronization messages such as LIE, TIDE, and TIRE packets, are carried as structured control messages between RIFT nodes to distribute link, node, and reachability information. RIFT is an unencrypted routing protocol by default and is intended for an administratively controlled routing domain; it is not a request/response application service.

security overview

UDP 915 should normally be permitted only between trusted RIFT interfaces and filtered at domain boundaries. An attacker able to inject or interfere with accepted RIFT traffic could disrupt adjacencies or influence routing state, so exposing it to the public Internet is inappropriate; use the protocol's available authentication and network-level access controls where supported.
