Technical Details

what runs on :9092

Apache Kafka commonly uses TCP port 9092 for its broker listener; Kafka uses TCP, not UDP, so an open UDP 9092 port is not explained by the usual Kafka deployment. The broker exchanges a binary request-response protocol over a persistent TCP connection, with length-prefixed requests carrying an API key, version, correlation ID, and client ID. The listener is often plaintext by default, though TLS, SASL authentication, listener ports, and inter-broker settings are configurable; 9093 is a common convention for a TLS listener, not a fixed requirement. This common Kafka use differs from IANA's Xml-Ipc Server Reg assignment to Casey Harrington.

security overview

Do not expose a Kafka broker directly to the public internet. Where authentication and authorization are absent or misconfigured, reachable clients may be able to discover broker and topic metadata and, depending on permissions, read or write records or perform administrative operations. Use network restrictions and properly configured authentication, authorization, and TLS; the IANA assignment alone does not identify the service actually listening.
