Technical Details

what runs on :8770

DPAP is Apple's Digital Photo Access Protocol for sharing photo libraries. In typical deployments, clients use an HTTP-like exchange over TCP to browse library and album metadata and fetch image files; the protocol is related to Apple's DAAP/DMAP family. iPhoto shares could be advertised for local discovery through Bonjour, which uses mDNS on UDP 5353 rather than UDP 8770. Although IANA lists both TCP and UDP for port 8770, TCP is the usual transport for DPAP sessions.

security overview

DPAP traffic is not encrypted by default. A reachable share may expose library contents and allow clients to retrieve shared photos; a library password, where configured, does not itself encrypt traffic. This is a legacy, rarely internet-visible service, but any active share should generally be limited to trusted networks rather than exposed publicly.
