Technical Details

what runs on :862

TWAMP separates session control from measurement traffic. A controller and server establish a TWAMP-Control connection, normally on TCP 862, negotiate session parameters and security mode, and then the session-sender sends formatted UDP test packets to the session-reflector or receiver. Returned packets contain sequence and timing information used to calculate delay, jitter, and loss; packet padding may be used to control test size. UDP 862 is the registered TWAMP-Test receiver port, although implementations can use negotiated ports for individual sessions.

security overview

TWAMP traffic is not encrypted by default in its basic unauthenticated mode, and an exposed receiver can be used for unwanted probing, resource consumption, or reflection-style abuse. Restrict the endpoint to authorized measurement systems with ACLs and rate limits; use TWAMP authentication or encryption modes where supported and avoid exposing an unrestricted reflector to the public Internet.
