Technical Details

what runs on :862

TWAMP-Control uses TCP port 862 and carries a binary control protocol. A client connects to the server, receives a server greeting, negotiates a security mode, and exchanges session-setup and session-start messages before test traffic begins. Measurement packets are sent over separate UDP test sessions, commonly associated with the TWAMP-Test service on UDP port 876; TWAMP-Control itself does not carry the measurement stream.

security overview

Do not expose TWAMP-Control broadly to the internet. Depending on implementation and negotiated mode, the control connection may be unauthenticated or may use authentication and encryption; an unauthenticated client can potentially create measurement sessions and consume device or link resources. Restrict access with network ACLs, enable the strongest supported security mode, and rate-limit or monitor test-session creation.
