RTSP is a text-based request/response protocol for controlling media sessions. A client typically connects over TCP and sends commands such as OPTIONS, DESCRIBE, SETUP, and PLAY; the server responds with status lines and headers. RTSP negotiates media delivery rather than usually carrying the media itself: RTP streams commonly use separately negotiated UDP ports, or can be interleaved over the RTSP TCP connection. Port 8554 is a widely used alternate to the default port 554; its registration for both TCP and UDP does not mean UDP is the usual control transport. RTSP is not encrypted by default, though implementations may support TLS.
