Technical Details

what runs on :8182

VMware FDM uses a proprietary control protocol over both TCP and UDP port 8182 for ESXi host-to-host cluster communication. The agents establish trusted peer communication using the vSphere HA cluster's security configuration; the service is normally present only on hosts participating in vSphere HA. Related VMware management traffic commonly uses TCP 443 for host and vCenter management, but 8182 is specifically the FDM agent channel.

security overview

Port 8182 should be restricted to trusted ESXi management and HA networks and should not be exposed to the public internet. It is a cluster control-plane service rather than a general remote-login interface; unexpected exposure can nevertheless reveal VMware infrastructure and increase the impact of vulnerabilities or trust-boundary failures in ESXi or vSphere HA.
