Technical Details

what runs on :7471

STT carries Ethernet frames in an encapsulation sent to TCP destination port 7471. It was designed to take advantage of NIC TCP segmentation offload and receive-side aggregation, reducing per-packet processing overhead for virtualized networking. Despite the TCP header, STT is not an ordinary application byte-stream service; its stateless design avoids the usual TCP connection and reliability semantics. The IANA assignment is for STT itself, not a web or remote-login service.

security overview

STT does not provide encryption or peer authentication, so tunneled traffic should be treated as exposed to the underlay network. A reachable STT endpoint may accept or emit encapsulated Ethernet traffic; keep the port on trusted virtualization networks and filter it from the public internet. Its rarity in internet scans makes accidental public exposure less common, but does not make an exposed tunnel safe.
