Technical Details

what runs on :705

AgentX is a session-oriented protocol between an SNMP master agent and subagents. A subagent opens a session with the master, registers MIB regions, and exchanges request, response, registration, and SET-related PDUs. The protocol uses a binary, network-byte-order framing format with a fixed header containing version, PDU type, flags, session, transaction, packet, and payload-length fields. IANA lists both TCP and UDP for this assignment, although normal AgentX deployments use TCP on port 705; SNMP itself commonly uses UDP 161 for queries and UDP 162 for traps.

security overview

AgentX has no encryption or general-purpose authentication in its basic protocol. It is intended for trusted local or management-network communication, so exposing it to the public Internet can allow unauthorized parties to query subagent data or perform write operations supported by the SNMP implementation. Restrict port 705 with host or network access controls and use the master agent's local transport where available.
