Technical Details

what runs on :7008

The service uses AFS's Rx remote-procedure-call protocol and is registered on both TCP and UDP port 7008, although AFS deployments commonly use Rx over UDP. An upserver accepts update requests and transfers configured administrative files to authorized AFS peers; the protocol is distinct from the core AFS services commonly found on ports 7000–7007, such as the fileserver, protection server, volume location server, and volume server. Encryption and authentication depend on the configured AFS security options rather than being inherent in the port number.

security overview

Port 7008 should be restricted to known AFS server peers and should not be exposed to the public Internet. An exposed updater may disclose or alter administrative configuration data, and deployments using clear or weakly protected Rx security can expose file contents or credentials; use authenticated/encrypted configuration where supported and filter unexpected clients.
