Technical Details

what runs on :7001

The AFS cache manager exposes the callback RPC service on TCP and UDP port 7001. AFS file servers use the Rx remote-procedure-call protocol to contact this listener and revoke callback promises when files or directories change, causing the client to discard or refresh cached data. AFS deployments commonly use UDP-based Rx; the related standard ports include 7000 for the fileserver, 7002 for the protection server, and 7003 for the volume location server. Authentication and optional encryption are provided by AFS security mechanisms such as rxkad rather than by the callback port itself.

security overview

This listener is intended for communication with trusted AFS file servers and should not normally be exposed directly to the public internet. Restrict it with network filtering to the AFS cell's servers and use the deployment's authentication and encryption settings; an exposed service may disclose implementation details or provide an attack surface for AFS/Rx vulnerabilities, although the service is uncommon on internet hosts.
