Technical Details

what runs on :6704

SCTP port 6704 carries the ForCES High-Priority (HP) channel between ForCES control and forwarding elements. After the SCTP association is established, ForCES messages use the protocol's message framing to convey control-plane operations; this is not a general-purpose application protocol. The registry assigns separate ForCES channels for other priorities on nearby ports, including 6705 and 6706.

security overview

ForCES can carry operations that affect forwarding behavior, so an exposed listener could present a sensitive control-plane target. SCTP does not encrypt or authenticate application data by itself; restrict the channel to trusted CE–FE networks and use suitable network protections, such as IPsec where deployed. It is obscure and rarely encountered in internet scans, but should not be exposed publicly when in use.
