Technical Details

what runs on :6514

On TCP, the sender establishes a TLS connection before sending syslog messages; RFC 5425 uses octet-counted framing so messages can be separated in the byte stream. On UDP, RFC 6012 defines syslog over DTLS, with messages carried in datagrams. Port 6514 is the default for both mappings; the conventional unencrypted syslog port is UDP 514. The IANA assignment covers TCP and UDP, though these are distinct TLS and DTLS transports.

security overview

Encryption protects log contents in transit, but a listener can still expose sensitive operational data if logs are accessible to unintended recipients. Restrict access to trusted senders and collectors, use certificate validation, and consider mutual TLS: server-side TLS alone does not necessarily authenticate the sender. Public exposure can also invite unauthorized log injection or resource-exhaustion attempts.
