Freeciv is a free and open-source strategy game modeled after the popular Civilization franchise. It supports multiplayer gameplay via client-server architecture, enabling users to host game servers to which multiple clients connect using TCP and UDP port 5556 by default. The game communicates various commands, world states, and player interactions across the network using its proprietary text-based protocol.
Freeciv servers listen on port 5556 to coordinate game events, handle turn processing, and distribute game state updates. Both TCP and UDP protocols are utilized: TCP is primarily used for reliable delivery of stateful commands, while UDP can be used for broadcast messages or certain low-latency functionalities depending on configurations.
Port 5556 is not officially assigned by IANA but is widely recognized as the default port for Freeciv servers. Because the server can be hosted on various operating systems, firewall and NAT configurations should be considered to allow inbound and outbound traffic on this port to facilitate gameplay.
