Channel Access uses both TCP and UDP on port 5064 by default. Clients send UDP search requests to discover servers hosting named process variables; after a server replies, the client typically opens a TCP connection for ongoing monitoring and control. The protocol uses its own message framing and does not encrypt traffic. EPICS Channel Access repeaters commonly use UDP port 5065 to manage discovery traffic on a host. Ports can be reconfigured.

Channel Access does not provide encryption or built-in authentication, and deployments may permit clients to read or write process variables unless access-security rules restrict them. An internet-exposed IOC can reveal control-system data and, depending on its configuration, allow changes to equipment or process state. Keep it on trusted control networks and use network segmentation and explicit access controls.
