Technical Details

what runs on :4740

IPFIX over TLS carries IPFIX messages from an exporter to a collector, with a TLS handshake before the message stream. IPFIX messages contain template and data sets; collectors use templates to interpret the exported records. The corresponding commonly used cleartext IPFIX port is 4739. IANA lists this service for TCP, UDP, and SCTP; ordinary TLS is stream-oriented, so UDP use requires an appropriate datagram-secure transport rather than plain TLS over a UDP socket.

worth attention. how exposed you are depends on configuration — don't leave it reachable from the internet without a reason.

security overview

Flow records can reveal communication patterns and other sensitive network metadata. TLS protects the connection in normal use, but peer authentication depends on the deployment’s certificate and policy configuration; restrict access to known exporters and collectors, and avoid exposing the collector broadly to the internet.
