Technical Details

what runs on :4729

GSMTAP is a datagram format for forwarding GSM radio-interface frames over UDP; UDP port 4729 is its conventional default. Each datagram contains a GSMTAP header with metadata such as the frame type and radio-channel information, followed by the corresponding payload. It has no connection handshake or session setup: senders transmit individual frames to a receiver, commonly a dissector or capture tool.

security overview

GSMTAP does not provide encryption or authentication. An exposed listener may receive forged or unwanted frames, while a feed sent across an untrusted network can reveal captured signaling and possibly unencrypted GSM traffic. It is generally an analysis interface rather than a service intended for internet exposure; keep it local or restrict it to trusted hosts.
