Technical Details

what runs on :4342

LISP control messages use UDP destination port 4342. There is no transport handshake: devices exchange messages such as Map-Request and Map-Reply for EID-to-RLOC lookups, and Map-Register and Map-Notify for registering mappings with a Map-Server. A Map-Resolver can receive requests and forward them toward authoritative mapping information. This is distinct from UDP 4341, used for LISP data-plane encapsulation. Map-Register messages can be authenticated with a shared key, but control traffic is not encrypted by default.

security overview

This is a network control-plane service, not an ordinary application listener. Expose it only where required for a LISP deployment; restrict peers and apply control-plane protections. Map-Register authentication helps protect registrations, but it does not encrypt traffic or authenticate every message, so an exposed endpoint may face unwanted requests, mapping disclosure, or denial-of-service attempts.
