Technical Details

what runs on :4317

OTLP/gRPC uses TCP with HTTP/2 framing and Protocol Buffers messages, including gRPC service calls for exporting traces, metrics, and logs. The conventional endpoint is localhost:4317; collectors and SDKs can be configured with other endpoints. TLS is supported but is not enabled by default in typical deployments, so deployments that need confidentiality or peer authentication must configure it explicitly. OTLP/HTTP is a related transport, conventionally on port 4318.

security overview

An exposed receiver may accept telemetry from unauthenticated clients unless authentication and network controls are configured. Untrusted submissions can pollute monitoring data or consume receiver and backend resources; telemetry can also contain sensitive operational details. Avoid direct internet exposure: restrict access to trusted networks and configure TLS and authentication where appropriate.
