Technical Details

what runs on :4063

Glacier2 uses the Ice middleware protocol, whose binary messages are carried over Ice connections. Its conventional endpoint is TCP port 4063; although IANA lists both TCP and UDP, TCP is the normal transport for the router. Clients connect to Glacier2 and use its session and authorization mechanisms to reach permitted server-side objects without opening direct inbound connections to those servers. IceSSL can provide TLS, but encryption is not implicit on a plain TCP endpoint.

security overview

Exposing Glacier2 makes an application gateway reachable from the internet. Authentication and permissions are intended to constrain access, but a misconfigured router can expose backend services, and unencrypted endpoints can expose credentials and application data to interception. Restrict access where practical and use IceSSL; do not expose it unless remote clients need it.
