Technical Details

what runs on :396

NetWare/IP encapsulates legacy IPX traffic within IP transport, primarily using UDP port 396; the IANA assignment also covers TCP port 396. It was designed to let IPX-only NetWare systems communicate across IP infrastructure without requiring an end-to-end IPX network. It is distinct from NetWare Core Protocol over IP, commonly associated with TCP 524.

security overview

NetWare/IP is obsolete and is not encrypted by default. Internet exposure is rarely useful and can reveal or expose legacy file-service infrastructure; restrict it to trusted internal or transitional network segments and remove it when legacy NetWare dependencies are retired.
