Technical Details

what runs on :388

LDM normally uses TCP port 388 for control and product-transfer connections; UDP 388 is also registered for LDM deployments that use UDP-based or multicast distribution modes. The LDM-6 protocol establishes a client/server session, negotiates or requests a feed, and transfers individually framed data products identified by metadata such as feed type, origin, creation time, and product identifier. The server is typically rpc.ldmd, and port 388 is the standard default. Access and feed selection are controlled through LDM configuration rules such as ALLOW and REQUEST, while received products are stored in an LDM product queue and routed by downstream processing rules.

security overview

LDM traffic is normally unencrypted and does not provide modern end-to-end authentication by default. Internet exposure can permit unauthorized feed access where configuration is permissive, consume bandwidth or queue resources, and provide a path for malformed or unwanted products to reach downstream processing programs. Restrict port 388 to explicitly trusted feed peers with firewall rules and LDM access controls; use a VPN or secure tunnel when distribution must cross untrusted networks.
