Technical Details

what runs on :38472

F1-C carries the 3GPP F1 Application Protocol (F1AP) over SCTP, conventionally on port 38472. After establishing an SCTP association, the CU and DU exchange F1AP messages encoded using ASN.1 aligned PER, beginning with procedures such as F1 Setup; signaling also supports DU configuration and UE-related control. F1-U user-plane traffic is separate and commonly uses GTP-U over UDP port 2152. SCTP and F1AP do not encrypt traffic by themselves; deployments rely on network-domain protections where required.

security overview

This is specialized RAN control-plane traffic and should normally be reachable only between authorized CU and DU components on a protected mobile-network transport. Exposure could allow probing or disruption of control-plane services, and the protocol does not provide encryption by default; use appropriate network isolation and, where required by the deployment, IPsec or other network-domain security. It is not ordinarily an internet-facing service.
