Technical Details

what runs on :3740

IANA registers heartbeat on both TCP and UDP port 3740. The established use is UDP: a tunnel client sends heartbeat/update datagrams to a SixXS broker so it can track the client's current IPv4 endpoint; the IPv6 tunnel data itself is carried separately, commonly as IPv6-in-IPv4 (IP protocol 41). This is a legacy, vendor-associated protocol rather than a general-purpose cluster health-check service. Do not infer a TCP application protocol from the registry's TCP assignment.

security overview

The legacy heartbeat exchange is not encrypted by default, but it is not a remote-administration service or a general-purpose data channel. Since SixXS is no longer operating, there is little reason for this port to be reachable on the public Internet; identify any current listener and restrict it to required peers rather than assuming it is a routine health check.
