RTSPS uses RTSP semantics over a TLS-protected control connection, normally TCP port 322. The client and server perform a TLS handshake before exchanging RTSP request and response messages such as OPTIONS, DESCRIBE, SETUP, PLAY, and TEARDOWN; RTSP messages remain text-based and use header-delimited framing. RTP and RTCP media may be carried over negotiated UDP ports or interleaved over the control connection; encrypting the RTSPS control channel does not by itself guarantee that separately transported media is encrypted, which may require SRTP or another configured mechanism.

TLS protects credentials and RTSP control messages when certificates are correctly validated, but an exposed endpoint may still reveal stream metadata or permit authenticated users to access, redirect, or control media sessions. Internet-facing deployments should restrict access with firewalls or VPNs, use strong authentication and certificate validation, and separately verify the protection of RTP or RTCP media. Avoid exposing cameras and other streaming devices directly unless required.
