Technical Details

what runs on :2882

NDTP traditionally runs over TCP port 2882; although IANA lists both TCP and UDP, normal implementations use TCP. A client connects to the dictionary server and exchanges cleartext protocol commands to select dictionaries, search entries, and retrieve results. Implementations such as ndtpd and ebnetd commonly expose multiple local EB/EPWING dictionaries through this service.

security overview

NDTP does not provide encryption or strong authentication by default, so dictionary queries and returned content can be observed or modified in transit. It is an obscure legacy service and should normally be restricted to trusted clients or placed behind a VPN or other access control rather than exposed to the public internet.
