A session begins with a bind request (such as bind_transceiver); subsequent messages use length-prefixed PDUs containing a command, status, and sequence number. SMPP traffic is normally carried over TCP; although IANA lists both TCP and UDP for this assignment, UDP is not standard for SMPP exchanges.
