Technical Details

what runs on :270

GIST Q-mode uses UDP port 270 to carry GIST signaling messages, typically for initiating or maintaining signaling exchanges when a more persistent message-association transport is not yet available. Messages are sent as GIST protocol datagrams with GIST headers and signaling payloads; UDP provides no transport reliability or encryption, so reliability and association setup are handled by the protocol and its related transport mechanisms. Implementations may also use the related GIST service over TCP for message-association transport.

security overview

This port is not normally intended to be exposed broadly on the public Internet. An exposed listener may receive unsolicited or malformed GIST signaling traffic and could be used for reconnaissance or resource-exhaustion attempts; GIST Q-mode itself does not provide encryption, so deployments should restrict peers and protect signaling through network policy or an appropriate secure transport.
