Technical Details

what runs on :2222

EtherNet/IP uses the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) over Ethernet. In normal deployments, UDP/2222 carries cyclic or event-driven implicit I/O packets, using connection identifiers and sequence information; traffic may be unicast or multicast. Connections are commonly established with CIP services over TCP/44818, although the IANA assignment lists both TCP and UDP for this historic EtherNet/IP I/O entry. The I/O traffic is normally unencrypted and unauthenticated.

security overview

Do not expose EtherNet/IP directly to the Internet. An attacker with network access may enumerate controllers and devices, disrupt I/O connections, or send unauthorized control and process data; the protocol generally provides no cryptographic confidentiality or strong authentication. Restrict it to segmented industrial networks and use firewalls, allowlists, secure remote access, and vendor-supported security controls.
