Technical Details

what runs on :2029

HSRPv6 normally exchanges control messages over UDP port 2029, using IPv6 link-local multicast on the local segment; the IANA assignment also lists TCP, although HSRP does not normally establish TCP sessions. Routers advertise their state, priority, virtual gateway information, and hello and hold timers, electing an active and standby router and sending periodic hellos. Typical HSRP defaults are a 3-second hello interval and a 10-second hold time. IPv4 HSRP conventionally uses UDP port 1985.

security overview

HSRPv6 is not encrypted and is intended for a trusted local link rather than the public Internet. An attacker able to inject or spoof HSRP traffic on the segment may cause failover, disrupt gateway service, or attempt to become the active router; restrict it to router-facing interfaces and use available authentication and control-plane protections.
