SGMP trap messages are normally sent as UDP datagrams from an agent to a management station; the IANA assignment lists both TCP and UDP for this service. Traps are unsolicited event notifications rather than request/response polling, and SGMP traffic is unencrypted. SGMP is associated with port 153, while the later SNMP protocol commonly uses ports 161 for queries and 162 for traps.
