Clients query an Oracle Names server for database service names and connection descriptors; protocol framing and exchange details are Oracle-version dependent rather than defined by a broadly used open standard. Modern deployments generally replace it with local tnsnames.ora files, LDAP-based directory services, or other Oracle Net naming mechanisms.
