Technical Details

what runs on :13400

DoIP is the automotive diagnostic protocol standardized in ISO 13400. A tester opens a TCP connection to port 13400, then typically performs routing activation before exchanging diagnostic messages with a vehicle gateway or ECU. Messages use an 8-byte DoIP header containing protocol-version fields, a payload type, and a payload length. UDP 13400 is commonly used for vehicle discovery and announcements. DoIP traffic on TCP 13400 is not encrypted by default; TLS-protected DoIP is available in deployments using the secure service, commonly on TCP 3496.

security overview

DoIP can expose diagnostic functions such as reading vehicle data, running tests, and—in suitably authorized sessions—programming ECUs. Access controls and the vehicle gateway’s configuration determine which operations are possible, so an open port alone does not imply unrestricted vehicle control. Do not expose it to the public internet; restrict access to trusted diagnostic networks and use TLS and appropriate authorization where supported.
