Technical Details

what runs on :10162

SNMP notification messages are carried as DTLS application data over UDP. A DTLS handshake establishes encryption and authenticates the endpoints, commonly using certificates or configured trust relationships, after which SNMP trap messages retain normal SNMP encoding and semantics. UDP/10162 is the secure trap port; UDP/10161 is used for secure SNMP request/response traffic, while UDP/162 is the conventional unencrypted trap port.

security overview

DTLS provides confidentiality, integrity, and endpoint authentication when trust is configured correctly. Internet exposure is generally unnecessary because trap receivers are normally reachable only from managed networks; exposed listeners may still be targeted for handshake or notification floods, and weak certificate or trust configuration can permit spoofed traps.
