Detailed Description

GPRS Tunnel Protocol is an IP based protocol, usually via UDP, which is used to controll and carry Data traffic within mobile (2/3/3G) networks.

Within the home or roaming networks the SGSN (2/3G) or MME (4G) nodes will lookup the GGSN (2/3G) or S/P-GW (4G) of the subscribers home network via DNS resolution of the APN name.

Once the GGSN/P-GW is resolved GTP-C will be used to request a data session for the subscriber, if successful a 'tunnel' will be created between the two network elements, and GTP-U will be used to encapsulate and tunnel the traffic back to the home network operator. Where the APN will be given access to the corporate network, or more commonly an internet service.

GTP-C (Control Plane) and GTP-U (User Plane) typically only operate via UDP, however the protocol does also support TCP.
