Port Title/Name
Brief Description

IRC, the Internet Relay Chat protocol, uses Port 194 TCP/UDP to provide a chat-room style service over a network such as the internet.

Detailed Description

IRC or Internet Relay Chat is a protocol that allows the communication in the form of text between multiple parties, it works using a client/server relationship where one or more clients will connect to a centralised server.

Once connected to the IRC server the clients can send messages to the server that will be then broadcast out to the other connected clients, it is therefore commonly used for group communication, where the groups are known as channels.

Extensions to the core functionality allow messages to be sent directly between users as a private chat, or even data transfer between two users.

IRC usage has declined over the past 10-15 years, however, it is still popular and used in a number of technical communities.
