Technical Details

what runs on :9306

SphinxQL is a SQL-like query interface spoken over the MySQL client/server protocol, usually on TCP port 9306. A client receives a MySQL-compatible handshake, then sends commands and receives MySQL-style result sets; this is not a general-purpose MySQL server. The listener is commonly configured as mysql41 in Sphinx’s searchd configuration. Sphinx’s native API commonly uses TCP 9312, a separate listener. Traffic is unencrypted by default.

security overview

An exposed listener can let remote clients query indexed content and may allow administrative SphinxQL operations, depending on the version and configuration. Do not expose it directly to the internet: restrict it to trusted hosts with firewall rules or a private network, since the interface is not a substitute for a secured database service and traffic is cleartext by default.
