Technical Details

what runs on :8172

WMSvc accepts TCP connections using HTTPS, so the connection begins with a TLS handshake. IIS Manager uses the service for remote administration, and Web Deploy can use its handler at the /msdeploy.axd endpoint. Port 8172 is the default management-service port; it is distinct from the Web Deploy Remote Agent Service, which commonly uses port 80.

security overview

This service provides remote IIS administration and deployment, so compromised credentials or a service vulnerability could let an attacker change server configuration or publish malicious content. Avoid exposing it broadly to the internet; restrict access to trusted networks or VPNs, use strong authentication, and keep IIS and Web Deploy updated. HTTPS encrypts traffic by default, but does not make an exposed management endpoint safe.
