Technical Details

what runs on :655

Tinc establishes authenticated, encrypted VPN connections between nodes using a TCP meta connection and UDP for direct encapsulated traffic when available. The protocol handles peer discovery, connection setup, encrypted packet transport, and mesh routing; traffic may fall back to TCP when direct UDP communication is unavailable. Port 655 is the conventional default for both transports.

security overview

Internet exposure is expected for tinc peers that must connect across the Internet, but access should be restricted to known peers where possible and the daemon kept updated. An attacker can probe the service and attempt protocol or authentication attacks; a compromised or authorized peer may gain access to the VPN's routed networks, so node credentials and network policy remain important.
