Tonido Directory Server
Tonido Directory Server operates as the central access point for Tonido—a cross-platform personal cloud and peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing platform. It facilitates device discovery, management, secure login, and resource listing for users running private Tonido servers. End-users can remotely access, sync, and share files across devices without hosting data on third-party servers, offering greater privacy and control..
Tonido is a personal cloud solution that enables users to create a private file-sharing environment without relying on centralized third-party cloud storage. The Directory Server, running typically on port 24465, functions as a rendezvous point or centralized directory for Tonido clients. It facilitates peer discovery, authentication coordination, and initial handshake establishment for secure communication between devices.
Tonido Directory manages the registration of Tonido nodes by maintaining a directory of active client endpoints. When a Tonido device comes online, it registers its presence so that other authorized devices can locate it to initiate direct peer-to-peer sessions. After discovery, file transfers and synchronization largely occur P2P, minimizing dependency on central servers during actual data exchange.
Technically, the server supports both TCP and UDP protocols for flexibility in connection establishment, helping traverse firewalls and NAT devices. Since the underlying communication is proprietary, Tonido encapsulates session management and directory updates within its application protocol, abstracting complexity from the end-user.
