Technical Details

what runs on :22000

Syncthing normally listens on TCP port 22000 for its custom block-exchange protocol over TLS, and can also listen on UDP 22000 using QUIC. Devices identify and authenticate one another using certificate-based device identities; the encrypted connection carries synchronization messages and file blocks. Syncthing’s local discovery typically uses UDP 21027, while global discovery uses a separate HTTPS service. This common use is distinct from the IANA SNAPenetIO assignment.

security overview

Syncthing encrypts connections and requires a peer to be accepted as a device before it can synchronize folders, so an open listener does not by itself grant access to shared files. Expose it only when remote device connectivity is needed, keep Syncthing updated, and review trusted devices and folder permissions: an authorized or compromised peer may receive or alter shared data.
