Kermit uses a negotiated packet protocol rather than a simple stream transfer: peers exchange initialization parameters and then transfer control, data, and acknowledgment packets with sequence numbers, checksums, and optional error recovery. Implementations commonly run over TCP when networked; the IANA assignment also includes UDP, although deployment-specific support varies. Kermit is not inherently encrypted, and packet sizes, windowing, and other transfer parameters are negotiated by the endpoints.
