Technical Details

what runs on :1527

Apache Derby Network Server listens primarily over TCP on port 1527 and accepts JDBC/DRDA database connections. Clients establish a DRDA session and exchange framed database requests and responses; the service is not an HTTP or raw Oracle SQL*Net listener. Derby commonly binds to localhost in development deployments, though it can be configured to accept remote connections. TLS is configurable rather than enabled by default. UDP is not normally used by Derby, despite the IANA registration covering both TCP and UDP.

security overview

An internet-exposed Derby listener can provide direct access to application data and may allow database operations if authentication and authorization are weak or misconfigured. Traffic is normally cleartext unless Derby SSL/TLS is explicitly configured, so credentials and query data can be intercepted. Keep it bound to localhost or an internal network, restrict access with a firewall, require authentication, and patch the Java/Derby installation. Some systems may instead be running an Oracle listener on this port because of the IANA assignment, but Oracle Database exposure is generally associated with port 1521.
