Technical Details

what runs on :1498

SQL Anywhere uses a proprietary client/server database protocol over TCP for connection establishment, authentication, SQL requests, and result-set exchange. UDP can be used for server discovery or advertisement rather than carrying normal database sessions. The commonly documented default listener port is 2638; port 1498 is therefore not the current general default and may identify a site-specific or older configuration. SQL Anywhere supports TLS-based transport security, but encryption is not inherently provided by the port assignment.

security overview

An exposed SQL Anywhere listener can disclose database metadata and provide a target for authentication attacks, protocol probing, and exploitation of unpatched database-server vulnerabilities. It should normally be restricted to trusted application and administration networks; use SQL Anywhere's TLS features or a protected tunnel where traffic crosses untrusted networks.
