Technical Details

what runs on :14500

Xpra carries its client-server session protocol over TCP, conventionally on port 14500. The peers exchange a protocol handshake and capability information, then send framed packets that can carry X11 window data and related features such as clipboard or audio; packet compression may be used. A TCP listener is not necessarily enabled by default, and SSH transport or local Unix sockets are common alternatives. Plain TCP does not encrypt the traffic; TLS or Xpra encryption can be configured.

security overview

An exposed Xpra listener can provide remote access to graphical sessions and their applications, so treat it as a remote-access service rather than an ordinary web port. Do not expose it publicly without strong authentication and encrypted transport; otherwise session contents and credentials may be at risk, and an unauthenticated or compromised listener can grant access to the session. Restrict access with a firewall or VPN and keep Xpra updated.
