Technical Details

what runs on :1094

The service uses ROOT's application protocol over TCP, normally on port 1094. A ROOT client connects using a root://host/path URL, establishes a session and authentication context, then issues remote file and object-I/O requests using ROOT-specific framing and request/response messages. rootd is distinct from the newer xrootd protocol even though both commonly use port 1094; the IANA assignment also lists UDP, but normal rootd deployments use TCP.

security overview

rootd should generally be restricted to trusted networks or protected with tightly controlled authentication and firewall rules. An exposed instance can provide access to scientific data and may reveal filesystem information or expand the attack surface of a legacy daemon; traffic is not encrypted by default, so use network isolation or an external secure tunnel where confidentiality matters.
